Wanderers are the game's own captains; no one is aboard. They sail while the seas are quiet, hunt pirates and slowly grow strong enough for the North and Fire seas. They never fight captains and gather the plunder of what they sink.
How to recognise them#
Wandering captains carry a teal "Wanderer" badge with a compass over their name and show teal on the minimap. Tap their ship and a card tells what they are. Older app versions show "(Wanderer)" after their name.
How many sail#
There are 8 wandering captains in all. How many sail a sea depends on how many captains are there: they withdraw as the sea fills up. They leave the harbor one by one and go where nobody sees.
| Captains at sea | Wanderers |
|---|---|
| 0 captains | 0 |
| 1 captain | 4 |
| 2 captains | 3 |
| 3 captains | 3 |
| 4 captains | 2 |
| 5 captains | 1 |
| 6 captains | 1 |
| 7 or more | 0 |
What they do#
- They hunt the sea's ships; badly hurt, they go back to the harbor to mend and then set out again.
- They never fight captains, and captains cannot attack them. They leave alone a ship a captain is fighting or is close to.
- They gather the plunder of what they sink (unless a captain is nearer to it); what they pick up goes to no one. Following one pays nothing.
- They don't chat, join fleets or appear on any board.
How they grow#
Each wanderer starts at level 1 and climbs very slowly, keeping only 5%–10% of the experience a captain would get from the ships it sinks. As it levels it takes bigger ships, moving to the Northern Ice Sea at level 22 and the Fire Isles at level 37. Their progress is kept across server restarts.
